The purpose of this document is to support policy makers across all levels and sectors of government in making policy decisions that contribute to the food security of Nova Scotians.

This workbook provides tools and information to inspire communities to come together and act to make food security a reality for everyone. It was developed as part of a series of research projects on food security. As well as using research and experiences drawn from the NS Food Security Projects, it incorporates ideas, insights and advice from people involved in food security issues and action across Canada.

A 10 page summary outlining the process, purpose and results from the 2004/05 Food Costing Study. This document describes participatory research and illustrates the reality of food security in Nova Scotia. The data is based on the National Nutritious Food Basket and uses scenarios to depict the affordability of food for various families in Nova Scotia.

The Nova Scotia Nutrition Council, the Atlantic Health Promotion Centre, and Family Resource Centres from across Nova Scotia came together to address the issue of not having access to nutritious foods. The result of this collaboration was the first participatory food costing study ever conducted in Canada - a project that ignited much of the food security work that is going on today.

This is a provincial strategy which outlines four priority areas: breastfeeding, children and youth, fruit and vegetable consumption, and food security.
